The Role Of Stamping Die Ejector Punches


Die Punch-also called punch pin or ejector punch, is installed on the stamping die to make continuous blanking operation and, as a result , make the separation or plastic deformation of the processed materials so as to obtain the required 

finished or semi-finished products.



Usual materials: The punch is generally made of high speed steel, spring steel and tungsten steel.


High speed steel punch and spring steel punch are the most commonly used. The high speed steels are Cr12MoV, SKD11, SKD61, SKH51, ASP23, etc. The spring steel materials are SUJ2, GCr15, etc. Tungsten steel material is generally used in high-level blanking and shearing die. Because of its high cost, and the need of complex machining technology, the use of tungsten steel punch is a little limited to some degree, it’s not widely used.



Usage: According to the use, the punches can be divided into pilot punch, burring punch, hexagonal punch, elliptical punch, sectorial punch, special shape punch…etc.



Punch surface treatment: usually we choose titanium plating or chrome plating.


The advantages of titanium plating treatment: after plating, the dimensional precision is easy to control due to the thin coating thickness 2 ~ 3μm. It’s feature is that the deformation is small, the surface friction coefficient is reduced, the surface hardness is increased, the wear resistance is enhanced, thus delaying the service life of the mould and die. The types of titanium layer are TiN, TiCN, TiAIN, TiCRN…etc.


The advantages of chromium plating: wear resistance increases, but the disadvantage is that the dimensional accuracy and consistency after plating is poor. In order to ensure the use requirements, further processing is needed and the cost increases.


1) 60-98HRC Tungsten Carbide Punch Application


Tungsten steel punch is made of tungsten steel round rod, which has the characteristics of high hardness and high anti-bending strength.

Generally speaking because of high hardness, long service life, the characteristic of corrosion and rust resistance, the metal machining processing industry likes to use it.

It is installed on the stamping die aiming to punch the material to make the material separate from the mould or produce plastic deformation so as to obtain the required parts. Also the punches installed in a large punch bed to machine large quantities of holes in the manufacturing industry.

  • Applied for punching hole in metal stamping machine bed or high speed stamping die for quantity processing.

Die Punch Surface Treatment Methods

The main surface treatment methods of die accessories are: electroplating, spraying, polishing, anodizing, blackening, etc.

The function is to improve the appearance, the corrosion resistance and wear resistance of the mold parts. Each has its own unique use environment and condition as below:


  • Steel Material Electroplating

Electroplating-Electroplating is a method of treating the surface of precision die components with a layer of metal film. Different metals, such as chromium, zinc, or nickel, are used as coatings in different utility environments.

Usage: It is used for parts with low dimensional accuracy requirements. Because the thickness uniformity of electroplating is not easy to control, the accessary processing is required to ensure the accuracy when the dimensional accuracy is high.


  • Steel Material Spraying

Spraying refers to the treatment method of spraying a layer of coating on the surface of precision mold parts.

Usage: It can be used as the final surface treatment for parts requiring high dimensional precision and high wear resistance.


  • Steel Material Polishing

Polishing refers to treat the surface into a smooth, flat, burr free state.

Usage: To improve the appearance, the micro roughness and wear resistance of the mold and die parts.


  • Common Steel Blackening

Blackening refers to the method of treating the surface of the mold parts into a layer of black oxide film.

Usage: Ordinary steel as a kind of mold parts material, if it's performance needs and corrosion resistance requirements are not high, blackening treatment can be cost saving.


  • Aluminum Anodizing

Anodizing- Anodizing refers to treat the surface of die parts into a layer of oxide film.

Usage: Because of its low hardness, usually used as an auxiliary mold accessories.
